The Legacy of Laphroaig
Our Heritage
Laphroaig has a rich legacy on the island of Islay. From an entrepreneurial family-founding in 1815, to Bessie Williamson’s historic tenure as Distillery Manager in the 1950s, our roots date back more than 200 years.
Our Process
We craft out bold whisky with passion and commitment, maintaining traditional practices like running our own malting floors and using a cold smoking technique to better infuse the essence of our Islay peat into our whisky. Laphroaig is one of the few remaining distilleries to have its own maltings.
Our People
Owing to its distinctive flavour profile, Laphroaig has grown in global popularity over many years, helping to put Islay on the map as a must-visit destination for whisky enthusiasts. Our global popularity is a testament to Islay, the distillery and its people, both past and present. Suntory Global Spirits currently employs 30 members of staff across various roles at Laphroaig Distillery.
Royal Warrant
Our dedication to sustainable, traditional methods of production was officially recognised in 1994 when we were awarded with a Royal Warrant. We achieved the certification by demonstrating best working practice across water usage, energy usage and managing waste targets.
We continue to strive for sustainable best practices across the distilling process, and as part of Suntory Global Spirits’ wider Scotch business, we have adopted tried and tested techniques that have helped to minimise our impact on the environment, including the application of industry-recognised water conservation methods.
