The Future of Laphroaig
Investing in our Future
Laphroaig Distillery has not benefitted from transformative investment in over 100 years. As demand for our iconic Islay whisky continues to grow around the world, now is the time to enhance and future-proof the site and to ensure it can continue to support and enhance the community.
Given the scale of the investment proposed by Suntory Global Spirits, the redevelopment of Laphroaig Distillery will be delivered over multiple phases. This approach will allow us to enhance and modernise the distillery, ensure it is efficient and sustainable, and continue to embrace the traditional methods of distillation that have made Laphroaig famous.
At the heart of our masterplan is our aim to adapt the distillery to increase its production capabilities. This will take some time and will include:
- Expansion of the stillhouse, increasing the numbers of stills, from the current seven to 11.
- The creation of 12 new washbacks and a new mash house.
- Restoration of the original ground floor maltings building, where the visitor centre is currently located.
In plans presented at the community event, a loop access road was proposed around the site. However, following the feedback received at the event, a new smaller turning circle is incorporated into the design, minimising impact to site footprint, whilst improving vehicle access around the distillery.
We have reduced the footprint of the stillhouse to better suit the wider site layout. Site wide landscaping will also help create a world class destination welcoming visitors and locals alike.
