The re-development of Laphroaig Distillery

Future-proofing an iconic destination on Islay for generations to come

Laphroaig and their parent company Suntory Global Spirits seeks to redevelop Laphroaig Distillery on Islay as demand for the iconic Scotch Malt Whisky continues to grow.

The distillery has not benefitted from transformative investment in over 100 years and it is now important to enhance and future-proof the site and, alongside this, its contribution to the island.

Over the last year, we have been exploring how we can best improve the distillery to increase our production capabilities, enhance the experience we offer to visitors and locals alike, and continue raising the bar in sustainability.

Working with an expert project team including architect, Energy Conscious Design Architects, we have arrived at a well-considered design that will respectfully enhance the traditional distillery site with modern features.

We will continue the traditional distilling practices that create Laphroaig’s distinctive smoky taste and maintain our focus on quality at every step of the way...

As a conscientious company, we wanted to ensure that the local community were aware of our re-development proposal and as such, hosted a dedicated information event at the distillery on 23 August 2023. This was in addition to one-to-one meetings with community groups and political stakeholders.

We were encouraged by the level of support we saw at the event and importantly, used it as an opportunity to gather feedback.  With this in mind, we have used the time since the event to refine our masterplan and we have now submitted a planning application to Argyll & Bute Council and await determination in due course.
